The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (Ed. D.) program focuses on developing leaders who are capable of reflective decision making, working collaboratively, initiating or responding to innovative change, and who have management and administrative ability. By integrating academic instruction with opportunities to apply leadership theory to actual workplace problems, the program helps students to:

  • Understand the relationship between theory and practice
  • Understand the context in which schools, colleges, and other institutions operate
  • Apply theory and contextual knowledge to educational problem solving
  • Develop analytical and communication skills required for successful leadership
  • Foster and sustain excellence 

Students may choose from one of the following areas:

The program is divided into three phases. Each phase includes coursework and ends with a Benchmark review. Students must successfully complete all of the coursework and pass the Benchmark in order to move into the next phase and continue in the Program.

Students may choose from one of the following tracks/initiative:

P-12 Education

This track is for those educators who are looking to gain advanced knowledge in the field with a special focus on developing the leadership skills and dispositions necessary to enact lasting and meaningful change within the preschool through secondary school levels.

Higher Education

This track is for educators who are looking to gain advanced knowledge in the field of higher education with a special focus on administration and leadership at the post-secondary/four-year college level.

Community College Leadership Initiative (CCLI®)

This special cohort is designed for those working in the community college sector and who are looking to gain advanced knowledge in the field with a special focus on community college.

Nurse Educator

This track is for those educators who are looking to gain advanced knowledge in the field with a special focus on educating nurses.


Mode of Delivery

Depending on which track or initiative, the Ed. D. in Educational Leadership at Rowan University is available:

Online

Includes courses where 100% of class meetings take place online (three in person residency meetings required)

Hybrid

A portion of class meetings for a specific course takes place online and a portion of class meetings for the same course takes place face-to-face; or
Includes courses where 100% of class meetings take place online as well as courses where 100% of class meetings take place face-to-face
