The Rowan University Master of Arts in Special Education is intended for new and continuing teachers who want to pursue advanced knowledge of students with disabilities. The purpose of the program is to provide advanced studies focusing on educational, psychological and sociological needs of the children and youth with disabilities. The M.A. in Special Education also aims to produce instructional leaders who are well versed in special education topics including collaborative teaching, administration, and assessment.

The M.A. in Special Education offers three tracks:

  • The Graduate Endorsement track is designed to qualify students, who don't currently possess it, for special education endorsement while simultaneously earning their Master's degree.
  • The Autism Spectrum Disorders track is designed for those who are already licensed to teach Special Education, but are interested in working with students with significant disabilities, especially autism spectrum disorders.
  • The Learning Disabilities (LD) track is designed to impart knowledge and skills in the current research on learning disabilities and methods so as to more effectively serve individuals with learning disabilities; and, in this program they are trained to be educational collaborators and leaders, to be change agents in their classrooms, and school districts.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE), not Rowan University, grants certifications based on requirements set by the state. While coursework for this program meets the academic requirements for NJ DOE certification, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that all other certification requirements are met, including, but not limited to, appropriate type and level of license and years of experience. NJ DOE certification requirements are subject to change. Certification applications are evaluated, by NJ DOE, based on the most current state requirements. The M.A. in Special Education is a part-time program offered on the Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ campus. It requires the completion of 30-36 graduate semester hours (10-12 courses), which are possible to complete in only seven consecutive semesters.

Admission Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional actions or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below, a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or will indicate any missing items.

  • Completed Application Form
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives

    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation

    • Letters of recommendation should be from professional administrators and include information which attests to applicant's ability to pursue a graduate degree
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Copy of NJ Teaching Certification (Standard or CEAS) in Elementary or Secondary Subject Area

    • If your certificate was issued prior to 1994, you must also submit official scores from the Praxis II content specialization test.
  • Interview (Applicants will be contacted directly by the Faculty Admissions Committee to schedule the interview. The interview may be in person or via telephone.)
  • On-site writing sample (conducted during interview)
  • The applicant must provide proof of appropriate certification, as well as a letter of employment confirming the specific dates (not just years) during which the applicant has taught or served the educational community under the appropriate certificate.
