The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Engineering in the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering (HRCOE) emphasizes intensive, novel research within a flexible graduate curriculum with a core focused on technical fundamentals.

With faculty-mentored biomedical research, students are trained to use engineering approaches to solve a novel contemporary biomedical problem in areas including biomaterials engineering, tissue engineering, biomechanics, biomedical robotics, drug delivery, biomolecule detection, and other emerging areas. Students in the biomedical engineering doctoral program benefit from our close association with physicians at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, which stimulates translation into the clinic.

With world-class research at the forefront of HRCOE's biomedical engineering discipline, as well as a growing business school on the main campus, HRCOE allows students to take advantage of South Jersey Technology Park at Rowan University, which fosters the translation of applied research into commercial products and processes.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Engineering at Rowan University requires the completion of 72 hours of graduate level coursework and research credits as well as the successful completion of a novel research project completed under the mentorship of a faculty advisor and culminating in a Doctoral Dissertation. The Doctoral Dissertation should demonstrate the student's ability to effectively apply engineering principles to solve a contemporary biomedical problem.

For applicants with undergraduate majors that are not Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field, Biomedical Engineering Core undergraduate courses may be required for completion of the degree (these courses are in addition to 30 required hours of graduate credits).

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below, a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or will indicate any missing items.

  • Completed Application Form
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten essay that includes a statement of professional objectives
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Foundation courses that need to be completed prior to starting the program:

    • Calculus III
    • Differential Equations
    • Linear Algebra
  • Eligible applicants must have successfully completed the following undergraduate foundation courses at an accredited institution prior to applying:

    • Chemistry I
    • Physics I
    • Calculus I & II
