The Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in Reading is designed to meet the increasing need for highly qualified practitioners in the area of reading. It offers a strong pedagogical and theoretical core from the reading discipline that will enable teachers to pursue an advanced degree. The Certificate of Graduate Study in Reading is offered by the College of Education, accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Teachers in the state of New Jersey may apply to the Reading Certificate of Graduate Study program through the New Jersey Teacher Outreach Program (NJTOP®). For more information about NJTOP, click here.

The Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in Reading is a part-time program offered in an accelerated online format. It requires the completion of 15 graduate semester hours (5 courses) which are possible to complete in only 3 consecutive semesters. Courses in this program may be used to satisfy course requirements in Rowan's Master of Arts in Reading or the Content Area COGS of Rowan's Master of Education in Teacher Leadership.

The following courses make up the Reading Certificate of Graduate Study program. Each course is scheduled in 8 week modules with each week of work starting every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and ending every Monday at midnight (Eastern Standard Time).

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below, a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or will indicate any missing items.


  • Completed Application Form
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives

    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation

    • Letters of recommendation should be from professional administrators and include information, which attests to applicant's ability to pursue a graduate degree
  • Copy of NJ teaching certificate (Standard or CEAS only)
  • The applicant must provide proof of appropriate certification as well as a letter of employment confirming the specific dates (not just years) during which the applicant has taught or served the educational community under the appropriate certificate.
