The COGS in Sustainable Business is designed for individuals looking to expand their knowledge and opportunities in the area of Sustainable Business. In this program, graduate students will examine the historical and philosophical origins of “sustainability” and “sustainable business”, examining how companies have responded to environmental problems, sought to serve an emerging market segment, and handled the nitty-gritty of implementing sustainability-oriented changes in areas ranging from operations and product design to finance, marketing, and human resources management. Increasingly we are aware of negative environmental and social outcomes of businesses around the world. For years it was accepted business could do some harm, so long as profits were made. But now, many in society and the business world alike demand better. While businesses and the political-economic milieu in which they operate are frequently villainized as the cause of environmental problems, it remains true that business activity and the world of commerce more broadly offer a powerful avenue for righting environmental wrongs. For that reason, this program also examines the impacts of “green” industries, products, and business practices
